Other transition considerations
When changing between biological medications, it is not only a matter of transitioning from an originator to a biosimilar. You also need to consider the route of administration.

Injection / infusion experience

It is important to consider whether the patient is transitioning from one infusion therapy to another – all of which takes place in a hospital – or whether the patient is transitioning from one injectable device to another.

This has a more profound impact on the patient’s experience, as they quickly realise that they need to use a new injection device. So not only do they have to come to terms with the knowledge that they are moving from one drug/originator to a biosimilar drug, they also need to process the fact that they are transitioning from one type of device to another. These are important points to consider, and the patient should be clearly informed, be on-board, and feel safe when it comes to the injection experience.
